Hope for Kisumu’s Slums

As an organization we believe in the spirit of partnership. This has been embodied by having like-minded partner organizations like Dewo Ngima, who has become a safe space for children in Kisumu’s slums. Recently the organization took the initiative to rebuild a house for one of the children’s parents. The elderly woman was living with 9 children in a house that was almost falling apart and Dewo Ngima took action to organize a fundraiser.

With support from Better Me, other partners from around the world and the local community, who put in their efforts to rebuild the house, the initiative became a huge success and the children are now living in a safe place. It goes a long way to show how working together can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Dewo Ngima has also started to organize cleanup activities with the children who live in the slums. Once every month, after the Mobile Library when the kids have already had their fill of reading books, they come together and clean a section of the slum. This has created a feeling of responsibility for the parents of these children and everyone else who sees what the kids are doing.  They become proud of what Dewo Ngima is overly able to achieve. This year there’ve been two cleanups already and our volunteers joined in to help.
